How to Grow Algae From Manure

The proper growing of algae on manure provides nitrogen rich fertilizer for lawns and gardens. Manure offers a fertile growing area for algae when treated properly. While algae is available commercially and readily grows on ponds, the cultivation of the blue-green substance may be profitable for the eager backyard grower. Always check for any local or regional laws concerning open area farming with manure. In urban settings, this concept may be unpopular with neighbors due to the smell.

Instructions

    • 1

Level the area of ground for the growing box. Select a spot with plenty of sun. Rake the area flat. The size of the space depends on how much room is available. The space may range from a 4-by-4 foot square to a 4-by-10 foot rectangle.

    • 2

Cut four 2-by-4 pieces of wood to create a square box. Adjust the length of the boards to the desired size of the growing area.

    • 3

Build a frame for the manure. Stand the 2-by-4 boards on their edges and drive a wooden stake on either side of each end, using the mallet. This will steady the boards, creating the frame for the algae growth. Form four sides with the boards to enclose the desired area.

    • 4

Cut mesh screen to fit the bottom of the frame. Measure inside the frame and cut the screen to fit using tin snips. Lay the screen in the bottom of the growing box.

    • 5

Mix dried manure with water. In a wheelbarrow, mix manure with water until soupy. Stir well with a shovel.

    • 6

Pour the manure mixture into the grow box. Spread evenly across the screen.

    • 7

Collect a small amount of natural algae from a pond or lake to jump start the algae bloom. Pick large, thick chunks of the substance and break apart over the spread manure.

    • 8

Keep the growing area damp. This will encourage the natural growth of algae in the box. The algae will begin to multiply or bloom on top of the manure and on the screen.

    • 9

Harvest the algae by removing the screen. Wait for the algae to thicken and begin to dry. Pull out the stakes from the frame for access to the edges of the screen. Lift or roll up the screen to remove the algae. The algae will be attached to the screen while the majority of the manure will remain on the ground.
