Can I Transplant My Gardenia Anytime?

Gardenia is an evergreen shrub native to China with flowers that rank among the most fragrant in the world. The plant has been cultivated in its native range for well over 1,000 years and was introduced into the United States in the Colonial period. Gardenias grow well in the ground and as container plants. The shrubs adapt to their new site better when they are transplanted at a particular time of year.
  1. Transplanting Time

    • The recommended time to transplant gardenias is during early spring or during fall, as cited by Jacqueline Heriteau in "Complete Trees, Shrubs & Hedges". Plants that are transplanted during these periods have enough time to established roots before the heat of summer. The lower plant requirement for water at these times also corresponds naturally with the reduced water uptake of newly transplanted roots. This in turn reduces transplant stress on plants.

    Soil

    • The proper soil is just as important for healthy plant establishment as the right transplanting time. Plant gardenia in well-drained soil well amended with organic material such as peat moss, manure or compost. The shrub grows best in a soil pH ranging between 5.0 and 6.5. In sites where the soil is not favorable for growth, it is best to plant in containers.

    Planting Tips

    • Make sure the planting hole is twice as wide as the rootball and just as deep so as to allow the root ball to be at soil level. When removing the plant from its container, do not pull from the top but lay the container on the side and slide out. After placing the plant in the planting hole, fill halfway with soil and then water. This will help the soil to settle. Finish filling in with soil to the top. Mulch with two to three inches of organic material to help conserve soil moisture and discourage weeds.

    Watering

    • All newly transplanted plants benefit from regular watering regardless of planting time. This helps the plant get established at a more rapid rate. Water the established gardenias regularly as well and especially during dry spells. Gardenias growing in dry soil have reduced blooming. Poor watering in an already blooming plant will lead to blossom drop. Water enough to maintain constant soil moisture.
