How to Grow Parsley & Basil in a Pot From Seed

Growing your own parsley and basil is great way to have fresh herbs for cooking. You can easily grow parsley and basil in your home in pots if you give both plants enough love and care. Make sure that you plant the seeds on a warm day, above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, or inside.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a pot with organic soil and moisten the soil with water.

    • 2

Sprinkle the seeds over the soil. With your hands sift the soil and seeds together gently so the seeds sit about one-quarter inch below the surface.

    • 3

Water the seeds and soil with a water can and not a garden hose. The key is to be gentle when you water to prevent the seeds from washing away or becoming uncovered.

    • 4

Place in a south window and make sure the basil or parsley get six to eight hours of sunlight a day. Water on a regular basis. Using organic fertilizer, nourish the basil every two weeks.

    • 5

Thin the basil seedlings to 4 to 6 inches apart when they are 2 to 3 inches tall. Pinch back the seedling above its first set of leaves, which grow in pairs. This will allow the basil to grow fully. For parsley, snip it for use when it's 2 to 3 inches tall.
