What Is the Difference Between Valerian Root and Melatonin?

Lack of sleep can disrupt anyone's home life. Often chosen as alternatives to prescription sleeping pills, valerian root and melatonin can help reduce insomnia naturally. Despite this similarity, these supplements have several distinct qualities that make them different.
  1. Origins

    • Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone found in the pineal gland in the brain. Valerian root is an herb found in nature.

    How They Work

    • Although melatonin and valerian root treat insomnia, they do so in different ways. Melatonin regulates the body's internal clock that controls when you wake up and fall asleep. Valerian root acts as a sedative that encourages the brain to release compounds that ease nervousness.

    Methods of Use

    • While both are commonly taken as capsules, melatonin is also available in lozenges and creams while Valerian Root also comes in teas and tinctures.

    Side Effects

    • Melatonin may cause vivid dreams and nightmares, stomach cramps, dizziness, mood swings, low libido and headaches. Men who take melatonin experience enlarged breasts and lower sperm count. Unlike melatonin, valerian root does not lead to any major side effects, although some users do experience excitability.

    Other Uses

    • Both supplements can be used to treat other ailments. Melatonin prevents sunburn and treats irritable bowel syndrome, while valerian root treats gastrointestinal problems, stress, palpitations and anxiety.
