Valerian Root: Directions for Use

Valerian root comes from a flowered plant that grows in the Northern Hemisphere and assists a variety of ailments. It helps reduce the time it takes for you to fall asleep and can also soothe bladder infections, nausea, depression or anxiety, according to Insight Journal. You can buy the root at any health food store, herbal supplementation store or online. It comes ground up in powder form, either as loose powder or put into capsules for easier use.

      Take a 150-mg capsule of valerian root anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours before bedtime, according to your reaction to the herb, to help you fall asleep. Adjust the dosage up to 300 mg if necessary. If the effects haven't worn off by the time you awaken, cut the dosage in half.

      Make some tea with the root to calm ailments like nausea or depression by adding 2 grams of valerian root powder to some hot water. A little bit of honey can help sweeten the tea and give it a more pleasant flavor.

      Add 1 tbsp. of valerian root tincture to a glass of water to help soothe anxiety during the day. This can be repeated every three to four hours.
