Grass Fed Organic Meats

Grass-fed, organic meats are low-fat and high in vitamins and essential fatty acids such Omega-3. Pasture-raised animals are not given growth hormones or antibiotics; they are able to roam freely and get plenty of fresh air and sunshine. Farmers who pasture-raise their meat believe that their products are better tasting and healthier; they also note that sustainable agricultural practices are better for the environment as a whole.
  1. Alderspring Ranch

    • Organic, grass-fed beef from Alderspring Ranch can be purchased from select retailers in Idaho and Montana or ordered online at the ranch's website. The cattle only eat pasture grasses and hay. They are not fed any grain, and the ranch itself is certified organic by Idaho's agriculture department. Beef products available for sale include steaks, roasts, ground and sausage; all of the meat is free of growth hormones and antibiotics. Alderspring Ranch notes that grass-fed beef is leaner than corn-fed, so care must be taken not to overcook the meat. The ranch's website offers cooking tips and recipes.

    Fleisher's

    • Fleisher's is a New York-based butcher that sells organic, grass-fed meat from animals raised on local, sustainable farms. None of the animals are given hormones or antibiotics, and all are fed a strict vegetarian diet. Customers can select from beef, poultry, lamb and pork; homemade sausages are also available. A variety of cuts of meat can be purchased, from porterhouse steaks to boneless chicken breasts to pork chops. Fleisher's suggests placing orders in advance because meat is cut-to-order; orders can be picked up at the company's Kingston, New York store or delivered to customers in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

    High Plains Bison

    • Bison meat has less saturated fat than salmon, beef, chicken and pork, notes High Plains Bison, which raises grass-fed bison. The animals roam Colorado plains, eating grass and native vegetation. They are not given antibiotics or hormones.

High Plains Bison notes that the American bison is not a buffalo, which is native to Asia and Africa. Early American settlers called the bison "buffalo" because they look similar. High Plains Bison sells steaks, sausages, burgers and hot dogs made from lean red bison meat. Meat from High Plains Bison can be purchased at specialty grocery chains or ordered through the company's website.

    Herondale Farm

    • Herondale Farm supplies customers with grass-fed meats including pork. The farm notes on its website that pasture-raised pork is low-fat and high in essential fatty acids as well as vitamin E. Pigs eat grass, clover and alfalfa, combined with organic feed mix. The animals are free to spend as much time as they like outdoors. Herondale Farm pigs are not given artificial growth hormones, antibiotics, or steroids. The farm's pastures are certified organic.

In addition to pork, Herondale Farm raises free-range organic chickens and grass-fed beef and lamb. Customers can purchase meat or poultry at the farm's store, or place orders online.
