Medicinal Properties of Flowers

The medicinal properties of flowers, plants and herbs promote mental, physical and emotional well-being. Alternative health and green medicine make use of healing flowers as ingredients in ointments, tonics and medicines used to treat a variety of ailments. For instance, substances from violet flower are an active ingredient in medicines for dry cough and bronchitis. Medicinally, American skullcap offers relaxant properties effective as a remedy for anxiety, nervous tension and convulsions. Traditional Chinese medicine makes use of the medicinal properties sourced from Chinese skullcap, which offers anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antiviral effects. The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) reports Chinese skullcap may also offer some cancer-fighting properties. Both skullcap varieties are perennial plants that produce flowers bearing a resemblance to a medieval helmet.

    Kava Kava

    • Kava kava (Piper methysticum) is a flowering shrub native to the Pacific Islands. Kava produces long, slender flowers borne where branches meet the plant stems. The roots of this flowering plant contain kavalactones (kavapyrones) --- a medicinal compound used to elevate mood and promote well-being. Kavalactones is useful in reducing convulsions, promoting sleep, alleviating anxiety and relaxing muscles. When taken orally, some people experience temporary numbness and a tingling sensation on their tongue from kava's pain-relieving properties. Despite its medicinal properties, kava also presents some health risks. The UMMC website indicates people suffered severe liver damage, including liver failure, from taking kava kava.

    Red Clover

    • Red clover is the source of healing properties used in the treatment of cancer, whooping cough, respiratory diseases and skin irritations such as psoriasis and eczema. This potent red flower also serves as an effective diuretic, expectorant and liver cleanser and also improves cardiovascular health. This nutrient-rich, perennial herb also supplies calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, thiamine, vitamin C and isoflavones. Red clover provides a natural way to treat osteoporosis and menopause symptoms.

    Feverfew

    • The above-ground parts of the daisy-like feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) yield medicinal properties. Feverfew contains parthenolide and offers an organic treatment for migraines, tinnitus dizziness, nausea and vomiting. The anti-inflammatory properties of the plant are an effective remedy for fevers, muscle spasms and arthritis. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine website lists feverfew as a treatment for everything from stomachaches and toothaches to insect bites, asthma, infertility, menstrual problems and childbirth-related pains.
