Split the palm leaf lengthwise with the knife. You will need two strips of equal width and length to braid a rosebud. Bend one piece around the end of the other in an "L" shape. Fold the ends over each other to create a tidy 90-degree angle.
Lock the corner by folding the vertical piece behind the horizontal piece and then the horizontal piece in front of the vertical piece. Reverse these directions once and the corner should be firmly locked.
Take the horizontal piece and push it through the locked area loosely, leaving a loop. Take its loose end and thread it back through the lock in the opposite direction. You should now have a loop on both sides of the vertical piece.
Thread the vertical palm through the lock, leaving a loose loop. Take the end that went through the lock and weave it back the other way, also leaving a loop. You should have four loops, each pointing in a different direction.
Fit the right loop inside the left loop from the horizontal weaving. This forms the center of a rosebud. Take the top vertical loop and place it over the rosebud center. The bottom loop from the vertical weave is placed over all three loops. Cut the loose ends or fold them under the rose.
