What are Composting Earth Worms?

Composting worms are the typical red worms used as fishing bait. Vermicomposting is the composting of kitchen scraps using these earthworms. Commonly called red wiggler worms, you can get them at bait shops or order them over the Internet.
  1. Type

    • Since red wigglers consume half their own weight in organic matter each day and recycle it into compost, only use this type of worm for your garden. Just like teenage humans, teenage earthworms eat more than adult worms. Therefore, you'll get more for your money from those baby worms who eventually turn into teenagers.

    Function

    • Composting worms turns your kitchen scraps into rich nutrients for your garden. Often referred to as black gold, the end result resembles very dark soil, which you spread around the base of your plants.

    Feeding Compost Worms

    • Feed your worms kitchen scraps. The U.S Department of Agriculture recommends avoiding acidic foods such as citrus fruit, meats, dairy products, onions, garlic, and heavily spiced foods. You may also feed the worms yard waste and paper.
