How to Press Ferns

If your nature walk has revealed a treasure trove of green, lacy ferns, gather a few of the ruffly fronds and press them. Most ferns are perennial and remain green all year long. Ferns are commonly found in shaded, woody areas, but you may have ferns in your yard, or even in your house. Pressed fern fronds can be framed or used in dried flower arrangements or wreaths. The pressed fronds can also be used to embellish stationery, personalized greeting cards or bookmarks.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut several fern fronds. Choose fronds that are brightly colored and nicely shaped. Avoid fern fronds that are wilted or fronds that have yellowing or brown tips. Set the fern fronds aside to dry for three to four hours, as slightly wilted fronds will be easier to dry and won't be as susceptible to mold or mildew.

    • 2

Cut a piece of flat cardboard. Cover the cardboard with four or five sheets of newspaper.

    • 3

Cover the fern fronds with four or five sheets of newspapers, topped by another piece of cardboard. You can make a stack that includes several layers of fern fronds, if you desire; just cover each layer of fern fronds with newspaper and cardboard.

    • 4

Cover the top piece of cardboard with a piece of sturdy plywood or other flat, heavy wood. Place three or four heavy books, bricks or other heavy objects on top of the plywood.

    • 5

Check the fern fronds every two to three days. If the newspaper is damp, replace it with dry newspaper. The fern fronds should be dry in two to three weeks, depending on the thickness of the fronds.
