How to Make a 55-Gallon Composter

Compost is decomposed plant matter used as organic fertilizer. The process of composting simply involves allowing the material to rot in damp conditions. Containing the compost during this process not only keeps the area clean and neat but contains the heat generated by the decomposition process. This heat kills harmful bacteria. Building a composting container from a 55-gallon drum utilizes a salvaged material to produce useful garden compost.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a metal or plastic 55-gallon drum that has not been used to contain or transport any hazardous substances. Avoid drums used for herbicides as the residue of these substances can linger in the drum. The drum should have one open end with a removable top.

    • 2

Drill 1/2-inch holes every 6 inches around the drum. Complete six of these rows of holes evenly placed from top to bottom of the drum.

    • 3

Place the barrel on wood or cement blocks for use.
