Insecticidal soaps are among the safest pest control methods available. Most commercial insecticidal soaps and detergents should be mixed to a solution of about 1 to 2 percent, or 1 to 2 oz. per gallon of water.
Liquid dishwashing detergent also works to control insects when used at low concentrations. Mix 1 to 2 tbsp. of detergent in each gallon of water.
Even commercial insecticidal soaps labeled for use in the garden can hurt your plants. Only apply soap solutions when the temperature is less than 90 degrees Fahrenheit and plants are not under full sun. Never mix a soap solution with liquid or powdered laundry detergent or powdered dishwashing detergent--these are too strong for plants.
