What Mixture of Detergent & Water Should We Use to Get Insects Off Our Plants?

Insecticidal soaps are commercial products that kill insects by disrupting their cell membranes and dehydrating them. Some home detergents can be used to produce a similar effect. However, using detergent and water mixtures not made for plants can cause problems.
  1. Insecticidal Detergents

    • Insecticidal soaps are among the safest pest control methods available. Most commercial insecticidal soaps and detergents should be mixed to a solution of about 1 to 2 percent, or 1 to 2 oz. per gallon of water.

    Home Detergent Mixes

    • Liquid dishwashing detergent also works to control insects when used at low concentrations. Mix 1 to 2 tbsp. of detergent in each gallon of water.

    Considerations

    • Even commercial insecticidal soaps labeled for use in the garden can hurt your plants. Only apply soap solutions when the temperature is less than 90 degrees Fahrenheit and plants are not under full sun. Never mix a soap solution with liquid or powdered laundry detergent or powdered dishwashing detergent--these are too strong for plants.
