The Average Height of Soybean Plants

The recorded practice of growing soybeans as a farm crop dates to 2838 B.C. in China. The plant was brought to the U.S. in 1804, and today is grown both commercially and in gardens.
  1. Height

    • The average height of a soybean plant is between 3 and 5 feet tall. This bushy plant of the legume family holds between 60 and 80 pods of beans, with each pod containing three pea-sized soybeans. The plant begins to grow between four and seven days after planting.

    Root Length

    • Soybean seeds should be planted no deeper than 2 inches into the earth. When planted outside of a container, the depth of a soybean root reaches between 4 and 8 feet, with the majority of the root in the upper 6 to 12 inches of soil.

    Growth Rate

    • Soybeans tend to grow more slowly than the majority of garden beans, requiring between three and five months of warm weather to reach maturity. The maximum height and best crop result if the soybean is planted at approximately the same time as tomatoes and other long-season plants.
