Composting Grubs Vs. Worms

Composting is the process of breaking down organic substances such as leaf litter, garden waste and kitchen scraps into a rich soil additive. Compost benefits plants because it has readily available nutrients.
  1. Worms

    • Composting with worms is also known as vermicomposting. One of the best types of worms to use for composting is the red wiggler (Eisenia foetida). Red wigglers are adaptable and capable of consuming large amounts of food each day.

    Grubs

    • Although grubs may be found in the compost pile, they do not help in the process of composting and are likely to be harmful to plants. The most common grub is the white grub, the larval stage of the scarab beetle

    Results

    • When worms are used for composting, the material they excrete is called worm castings. This is rich in organic matter, has beneficial microbes and is a valuable addition to the soil.
