The Traditional Method of Making Organic Fertilizer by Dry Mealing

Dry mealing refers to the traditional process of drying animal blood left from the slaughtering process to use either as food or fertilizer. Since farmers had to use everything at their disposal to make their farms productive, nothing was wasted. Cultures of many countries have perfected the art of making sausages from animal blood, but in the United States, the blood is dried and used for fertilizer and plant food.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect the blood from a freshly killed, healthy animal into a stainless steel pot, and place it over a low heat to coagulate. Stir with a stainless steel spoon to make sure nothing sticks to the bottom of the pot.

    • 2

Strain out the solids by pouring the contents of the pot through a fine strainer.

    • 3

Dump the solids onto a tray, and set them aside to dry for a couple of days. Set the tray in sunlight to speed up the drying process, or place it in a warm oven for an hour or two.

    • 4

Scrape the dried blood into a bag, being careful not to breathe in any dust. With gloved hands, break up the chunks into small pieces.

    • 5

Clean all your utensils in hot, soapy water.
