Milled Vs. Ground Flax Seed

Flax seed is a dietary source that is rich in fiber. Milled or ground flax seeds are primarily used for health benefits associated with abnormalities that span from constipation to high blood pressure and diabetes. Beliefs in the health benefits date as far back as the eighth century when King Charlemagne made it a law for his subjects to consume flax seed.
  1. Milled Flax Seed

    • Milled flax seed is sold in whole seed form. Some users prefer milled form to maintain the integrity and freshness of the seeds. However, milled seeds may not be ingested by the body as efficiently as ground flax seeds. .

    Ground Flax Seed

    • Ground flax seed is preferred by many to avoid dilution of potential health benefits. In ground form, flax seed can be added to beverages and foods for consumption. The human body is able to digest ground flax seeds better and without the risk of "eliminating" the nutrients as excrement.

    Usage and Considerations

    • Milled flax seeds can also be ground on an "as needed" basis to reduce concerns about the aging of the seeds. Ground seeds dissolve easily in liquids. Either form can be added as an ingredient to everything from breads to oatmeal, yogurt to pancakes, and as an ingredient for other cooking recipes. Pay careful attention to the expiration date on packaging and labels. Store both forms in airtight containers. Never expose milled or ground flax seed to excessive heat or moisture.
