Sunflower seeds contain lots of vitamins, protein and fiber, such as vitamins A, C and E, zinc and magnesium. However, 1 tsp. of sunflower seeds contains 2.3 grams of fat worth 21.5 calories, and 27 calories in total. Budgies gain weight easily and, by nature, will eat as long as there is food. Feed sunflower seeds sparingly and only as treats.
Give your bird treats only on special occasions. Seed treat sticks are best given twice a month. Sunflower seeds may be given as treats on occasion, but only give your budgie a pinch, or 2 to 3 seeds at a time. Do not include sunflower seeds in your bird's daily routine and stick to healthy snacks like sprouted seeds instead.
Fatty Liver Disease (Lipidosis) poses a significant risk for your pet budgie if you feed your bird incorrectly. Too many seeds with a high fat content, such as sunflower seeds, and your bird could get sick. Most seeds lack some of the essential amino acids and don't offer enough complete protein. Seeds are not bad per se, they just should not be the main component of your budgie's diet. Offer a mixed diet of pellets, seeds and some fruits and vegetables and your budgie will enjoy a long life.
