How to Compost Yucca Fronds

Planting and maintaining a thriving garden requires time, hard work and soil amendments through compost and fertilizer. A garden or yard can also turn out a surprising amount of waste through pruning and standard plant die back. Green and responsible gardeners take the scraps from the garden and turn them around for reuse through composting. If you don't have a compost bin, but have garden waste like leaves, grass and yucca fronds, put a bin together to recycle plant matter for your garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Put a 20- to 40-gallon plastic container in a spot that gets sun and air circulation, with protection from natural rainfall. Make sure that your compost bin is convenient to kitchen, yard and water faucet to ease your maintenance routine.

    • 2

Fill the bin one-third full of garden soil to give the compost structure. Add yucca fronds and any other garden scraps or waste. Cut off flower or weed heads before adding their foliage, to keep from spreading these seeds through your compost and garden. Don't add mushrooms, as those will sprout in your compost and spread to your garden.

    • 3

Add kitchen and house scraps, to give the compost pile a good balance of vitamins and minerals. Include fruits and vegetables, ash, paper, bread, coffee grounds and egg shells. Do not include meat, poultry or fish products, as these will draw insects and pests.

    • 4

Use a hose to water the pile until it's moist throughout, and use a shovel or garden fork to turn the pile over. Water the pile once a week to maintain a good moisture level, and turn it over at least once a day.

    • 5

Add material to the pile once a week, including more yucca fronds, yard scraps and kitchen waste. Spread the compost through your garden when it gets dark and crumbly.
