How to Compost With a Garbage Disposal

Creating compost from kitchen scraps saves space in garbage dumps and saves money on artificial fertilizers. When there are left overs after breakfast, lunch or dinner, they often end up in the trash. Many of these scraps can be placed into the garbage disposal instead and turned into compost with a flip of a switch. Not all food makes good fertilizer, so ensure proper care is taken in separating materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate meats and fat-containing foods from other food items. These items are susceptible to bacteria, and along with oily foods, will become rancid. Dispose of all meats, butter, lard, oils and cheeses into a garbage receptacle.

    • 2

Chop any large vegetables, fruit, fruit peels, bread pieces or egg shells into small pieces. Tear paper napkins, used tea bags and coffee filters into sizes small enough to easily fit through the garbage disposal opening. Place them into the sink that contains the disposal.

    • 3

Turn on the water in the sink attached to the garbage disposal. Run only a small stream.

    • 4

Turn on the disposal and listen for the grinding sound. When the grinding sound stops, turn off the disposal and the water.

    • 5

Remove the trap from the disposal and add the contents to an outdoor composting bin or other compost container.
