How to Make a Seed Sprouter for Sprouting

Sprouting is a quick and simple way to grow vegetable sprouts no matter where you live. You don't need garden soil, sunlight, or a lot of space to get healthy sprouts for your salads and sandwiches every day. One of the most common methods of sprouting uses a seed sprouter made from an everyday canning jar. This classic sprouter design will hold a large number of seeds for sprouting, while affording the seeds the drainage they need for healthy growth. Purchase plastic screening with holes slightly smaller than the seeds you are planning to sprout. You may want to buy two or three different types of screen if you want to sprout a variety of seeds. Get scrap remnants if possible to save money, because you need only a small piece for each sprouter.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the canning jar on top of the screen with the opening down. Use a black marker to draw a line around the jar, using it as a pattern to copy the size of the circular opening.

    • 2

Cut a circular piece from the screen using the pattern you drew as a guide. Cut 1/2 inch out from the drawn line, making the final circle larger than the opening in the jar.

    • 3

Place the plastic screen circle on top of the jar, matching up the drawn line with the edge of the jar opening. Screw on the jar ring over the screen, trapping the edge of the screen between the ring and the edge of the jar. This will cause a crease in the screen, fitting it to the jar. Your sprouter jar is now ready to be filled and used.
