How to Make Fertilizer for Azaleas

Before fertilizing azaleas, consider that the shrubs are not heavy feeders. If you add organic matter to the site before planting them, azaleas will have enough nutrients to last the growing season. Feed azaleas only when a soil test indicates the need. Since the bushes have shallow roots, apply the nutrients to the soil surface and water them in. Select an acid-forming formula. When preparing a homemade azalea fertilizer, include coffee in the recipe to provide acidity.

Instructions

    • 1

Blend 1 cup bone meal and 1 cup granite dust with the coffee when it becomes completely dry.

    • 3

Sprinkle 2 to 3 tbsp. homemade fertilizer uniformly around the base of the azalea in spring or fall. Water the fertilizer in. Don't exceed 3 tbsp. maximum to avoid burning the plant's roots.
