How to Grow & Rinse Alfalfa Sprouts

Alfalfa sprouts are a nutritional food that you can grow in your home with minimal costs. Sprouts are the first stages of plant growth and contain good levels of protein, carbohydrates and vitamins for a healthy addition to your diet. Purchase sprouting seeds from a garden supply or health food store to guarantee the seeds are safe to eat and do not contain pesticides. It is important to rinse the sprouts regularly during the growing process to prevent bacteria or mold growth around the seeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the jar in hot water and rinse well to remove residue. Cut a piece of cheesecloth to fit 1 inch past the rim of the jar. You can also use a washable screen designed for sprouting seeds in a jar. These are available at garden supply and health food stores.

    • 2

Measure 1 tbsp. alfalfa sprout seeds and pour them into the jar. Pour water over the seeds until completely submerged.

    • 3

Place the cheesecloth on top of the jar and secure tightly with a rubber band. Set the jar in an area where it can rest, undisturbed, for approximately 12 hours. This lets the seeds soak and moisten for germination.

    • 4

Turn the jar upside-down over a sink to drain all liquid from the seeds. Place the jar in a dark area for four days.

    • 5

Rinse the seeds three times a day by covering the seeds with cold water, lightly shaking the jar and draining the water through the cheesecloth or screen. Keep the seeds moist, but not in standing water.

    • 6

Remove the jar from the dark place after four days and rinse the new sprouts with cold water. Place the moist seed sprouts in a sunny area and let the alfalfa sprouts grow and turn green.

    • 7

Rinse the sprouts when they are 1 to 2 inches long to remove the seed hulls before eating. Use cold water and place the sprouts in a colander to drain. Store alfalfa sprouts in the refrigerator for up to one week.
