How to Add Flaxseed to Cereal

Flaxseed is a common addition to breakfast cereals, smoothies and yogurt because of its beneficial properties to the human body. Flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids, alpha linolenic acid, dietary fiber, protein and potassium, all of which are essential to a healthy way of life. Adding this beneficial seed to your cereal every morning will help relieve constipation, reduce cholesterol, keep your skin healthy and control glucose levels. To get the full benefits from flaxseed, there are a few things you should know.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy ground flaxseed rather than whole flaxseeds. Flaxseeds must be ground for your body to absorb the omega-3 fatty acids.

    • 2

Sprinkle 1 tbsp. of ground flaxseeds over your cereal. Don't mix the seeds in to keep them from settling to the bottom of your bowl. If you notice whole flaxseeds in your cereal, you may want to buy a brand without flax already in it.

    • 3

Repeat Step 2 every day, but do not increase the amount of flaxseed. Too much fiber can cause either diarrhea or constipation, as well as inhibit the absorption of nutrients in your body.
