How to Refresh a Smoker's Room With Essential Oils

A smoker's living space, furniture and clothing can become permeated by the noxious scent of tobacco. Stale cigarette and cigar smoke, herbal smoking blend residue and pipe tobacco fumes linger in the air, infiltrating all porous materials. Additionally, the oily film left behind by tobacco smoke discolors and soils all hard surfaces. Pure and natural, organic essential oils can be used to disperse the offensive odors, cleansing and purifying the air. Essential oils are a chemical-free, environmentally friendly alternative to toxic commercial cleaning products.

Instructions

Calming lavender oil induces sleep and well-being.

Wipe down and clean all hard surfaces, including counter tops, windows, mirrors, bed frames and appliances, with a cleaning solution composed of 1/2 cup water, 2 cups white vinegar, 12 drops thyme essential oil, 12 drops eucalyptus essential oil and 12 drops lavender oil. Stir the mixture and dampen a cleaning cloth with it. Scrub with the cloth to remove tobacco residue and soil from all washable surfaces. Polish with a clean, dry cloth.

Circulating fresh air helps remove odors from clothing.

Hang all bedding and clothing outdoors to air out, and open the windows and doors to ventilate the living space.

    • 3

Place several drops of eucalyptus essential oil onto a cotton ball. Arrange several of these cotton balls on windowsills and doorways, allowing the cleansing scent to circulate throughout the home.

Lemon essential oil can be added to bathwater or laundry.

Add 20 drops of lemon or orange essential oil to 1/2 cup industrial-grade lemon oil furniture polish. Saturate a small rag with the mixture and gently wipe down the surfaces of all wooden cabinets and furniture. The mixture can also be used to polish windowsills and baseboards. Polish any remaining residue away with a dry cloth. The essential oil will cut through tobacco smoke resins and grease, leaving the furniture with a soft, lustrous glow.

The scent of thyme essential oil refreshens stale, smoke-filled rooms.

Add 20 drops of thyme, rosemary, lavender or eucalyptus essential oil to 1 cup baking soda and stir the mixture. Sprinkle the soda on carpets, mattresses, pillows and upholstered furniture. The soda absorbs oils, soil and offending odors, leaving the carpets and upholstered furniture fresh and clean. Prepare more of the mixture as needed. Leave the soda mixture on carpet, furniture and bedding surfaces for at least 1 hour. Vacuum well to remove all soda residue.
