What Type of Flowers Are in Tiered Flower Pots?

When planning the arrangement of flowering plants, I like to mix tall, short and cascading seedlings for a balanced display. A set of tiered pots will allow for a number of plants to be set into soil for a centerpiece for the front or back yard. Pots can be staggered or set within one another for a floral fountain effect.
  1. Colors and Texture

    • Combine complementary colors or use shades of a single color for a stunning tiered display. The mixture of red geranium, white petunia and blue lobelia is a beautiful Memorial Day and Fourth of July living bouquet. Deep pink snapdragons, medium pink zinnia and pale pink petunias will add beauty to your property for a summer party or wedding setting. Begonia and petunia blossoms have large yet delicate petals, while the zinnias have thick multipetaled ruffled heads.

    Cascading

    • Geraniums are sturdy, colorful cascading plants.

Grow flowering plants that will cascade over the sides of the tiered pots. Petunia, ivy geranium, fuchsia, begonia and lobelia will add masses of flowing blossoms to the containers. The sweeping branches of leaves and flowers will cover a great deal of the container giving the sense that the flowers are everywhere.

    Filler Plants

    • Plant shorter flowering seedlings into the sides of the tiered containers. Use colorful pansies, fluffy ageratum, allyssum and marigolds to fill in the terra cotta or ceramic pots. As the plants mature and begin flowering they will present a mass of blooms. New Guinea impatiens add vibrant colored leaves to the butterfly-like flowers for an 8- to 10-inch-high filler plant. Chrysanthemum plants will be a nice fall replacement when the more delicate summer flowers are past their prime.

    Indoor

    • Hanging and stationary tiered flower pot holders are attractive containers for the home. Use colorful African violets to fill in the middle tier for long-lasting blooms. Flowering Christmas and Easter cactus and other cascading plants such as the spider plant will flow over the side from the top tier downward. Add exotic flowering orchid plants to the top center of the tiered display. Cyclamen and poinsettia plants will create a colorful tiered Christmas flower decoration.
