Popular Moth Orchids

Known for its ease of growing, the Phalaenopsis or moth orchid is a favorite for those who want to try their hand at raising members of this exotic family. Flowers grow on a single stem and, when in bloom, resemble a moth in flight, hence their common name. While this member of the orchid family boasts some 60 different varieties, there are several well-known plants to consider for your household.
  1. Imperial Purple Moth Orchid

    • With its bright lavender to dark purple colors, the Imperial Purple moth orchid is one of the most colorful varieties. Its fragrant flowers are found in a cluster at the top of a single stem and will usually last for eight to 12 weeks. The plant does well at normal room temperatures. It is often found in table arrangements and bridal bouquets.

    The Lovely Phalaenopsis

    • The national flower of Indonesia, the Lovely Phalaenopsis, or Phalaenopsis amabilis, is known for its large white flowers that last from spring into the summer. The plant prefers warmer temperatures -- 68 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit -- than some of the other moth orchids, but its fragrant flowers make up for any extra care. It does well in partial shade and is also known for its use in bridal bouquets.

    The Gigantic Moth Orchid

    • The Gigantic Phalaenopsis gets its name from its large leaves. While this variety of moth orchid can bloom at any time, flowering is more likely to occur in the late summer to early fall. The flower petals are shiny on both sides and usually have red stripes or splotches on a pale yellow background.

    Horse Phalaenopsis

    • Originally from Taiwan and the Philippines, the Horse Phalaenopsis, or Phalaenopsis equestris, can bloom at any time during the year, although it is more likely to do so between September and April. The flowers are usually lavender with one petal darker than the others. While this moth orchid variety prefers the shade and warm to hot temperatures (68-degree evenings to 85-degree days), it is adaptable to most climate conditions.
