How to Propagate Gloxinia

Gloxinia is a flowering houseplant similar to the African violet. Gloxinia blooms are bell shaped, about 3 inches in diameter, and grow on a long stem. The flowers come in a variety of colors, from red to blue, and have single or double blooms that may be smooth or ruffled, and are sometimes edged with white. Leaves are velvety and oblong. Propagate gloxinia by seeds, cuttings or tubers.

Instructions

  1. Seeds

    • 1

Place a shard of pottery over the hole in a clay flowerpot to prevent soil from falling through.

    • 2

Add 1 inch of gravel to the bottom of the pot, then fill it with sterile potting soil.

    • 3

Sprinkle gloxinia seeds on top of the soil, spacing them evenly. Do not cover the seeds with soil.

    • 4

Place the pot in a container of water to soak up water from the bottom. Seeds dislodge when you pour water on the surface of the soil.

    • 5

Place plastic wrap or a piece of glass over the pot, and put it in a warm place with indirect light. Keep soil damp by placing the pot in a saucer of water. Remove the plastic or glass when seeds germinate in six to 10 days.

    • 6

Transplant the seedlings to individual 4-inch containers filled with potting soil when three sets of leaves appear.

    Cuttings

    • 7

Cut a leaf with a stem, as close to the main stem as possible.

    • 8

Insert the cutting into a flowerpot filled with equal amounts of construction sand and peat moss, or place the stem into a glass of water.

    • 9

Place the cutting in indirect sunlight, and keep the planting medium moist, or replace the water when it evaporates or looks cloudy. Roots should form in several weeks.

    • 10

A small tuber may form at the end of roots in the glass. Plant gloxinia seedlings in pots filled with potting soil when the roots get 1 to 2 inches long.

    Tubers

    • 11

Fill a 5-inch or larger pot with sterile potting soil.

    • 12

Place the tuber, rounded bottom down, in the soil, and cover it with soil so it sits just under the surface.

    • 13

Place the pot in an area at 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and water every three to four days from the bottom. Do not let the soil become dry.
