How to Prune Water Hyacinths

Water hyacinths are aquatic flowers that produce large clusters of pink, white, blue or purple flowers. These flowers are very easy to grow and, in fact, can grow too easily. The species is considered an invasive plant because it spreads very quickly. A grouping of hyacinth plants can create a mat of leaves, roots and blooms on the top of the water. The mat can block oxygen from entering the water, killing other underwater plants as well as fish. Pruning water hyacinths is necessary to prevent the plant from becoming invasive in your pond.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a large tarp out on the ground beside the body of water in which you will be pruning your water hyacinth population.

    • 2

Rake the dead water hyacinths and the excess plants toward you. You will be able to easily remove the plants because their roots are not growing into the ground.

    • 3

Gather the excess water hyacinths in a large net and place them on top of the tarp.

    • 4

Allow the water hyacinths to dry on the ground for a few days, then remove them from the tarp. Run over them with a lawn mower with a mulching attachment and dispose of them.

    • 5

Prune your water hyacinths regularly so that they do not get out of control.
