How to Grow Alpinia Speciosa

Alpinia speciosa, also known as Alpinia zerumbet or variegated shell ginger, can be an attractive addition to home gardens with green and creamy yellow foliage, white blooms tipped with pink and small, red fruits. In its native Indochina, the plants can grow as tall as 12 feet; however, in other areas, the plants rarely reach beyond a height of 3 to 4 feet. Aside from its ornamental appearance, Alpinia speciosa has a spicy fragrance from its leaves and is pest-resistent. It is quite simple to grow within USDA zones 8 to 12.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant an Alpinia speciosa rhizome approximately 1 inch into the soil in an area with partial shade to full sun. If planting more than one plant, space them 24 to 36 inches apart. The ideal soil for growing this species is rich in nutrients and well-drained. If necessary, you may wish to amend the soil with compost prior to planting the rhizome. To do this, loosen the planting site's soil with your hands or a trowel and mix the compost thoroughly into it.

    • 2

Mulch the Alpinia speciosa plant when it reaches 6 to 8 inches. This will help the soil retain moisture and heat. Alpinia speciosa is not particularly tolerant of cold, and freezing temperatures may prevent it from blooming.

    • 3

Water the Alpinia speciosa regularly. The soil should be slightly moist at all times for optimal growth. In most areas, this requires watering every few days in the absence of rain; however, it may vary depending on your climate. Periodically feel the soil with your finger and you will soon have a good idea of how long it takes for the soil to begin to dry out and need water. When the Alpinia speciosa plant is deprived of adequate water, its leaves will begin to brown.

Fertilize the Alpinia speciosa monthly. Use a well-balanced fertilizer that provides ample nutrients for optimal growth. Follow your chosen fertilizer's instructions for application amount and method.
