What Kind of Azalea Is White With Red Trim?

Azaleas are included among the 800 species of rhododendrons. More than 10,000 named varieties exist, with thousands commercially available at any time. Breeders constantly develop new and exciting azaleas for market. The range has expanded to include single, double and ruffled flowering forms in many colors, including white with red trim.
  1. Belgian Indian Hybrids

    • Belgian Indian hybrids were originally developed in Belgium and England in the 1980s to be used as greenhouse forcing plants. They are very frost-tender and are not generally recommended for landscape use, though they are grown outdoors in very low-frost regions. The flowers are either single or double, or semi-double with frilled petals. Leopold-Astrid sports double white flowers with deep, rosy-red-trimmed petals. Albert-Elizabeth is also displays double white flowers. The petals are edged in orange-red.

    Satsuki hybrids

    • Satsuki hybrid azaleas were introduced to the U.S. from Japan in 1938. They are becoming more available in the U.S., but are primarily grown in Japan. The plants grow 2 to 5 feet tall and wide producing large flat or frilled flowers up to 5 inches across. Satsuki hybrid azaleas are showy, with color variations sometimes occurring on individual plants. They are suitable for low-frost gardening regions. Shinnyo No Tsuki produces large white-centered flowers with deep rose borders. Gunbi displays frilly white flowers with red flecks or stripes. They bloom in May through June where adapted.

    B.Y. Morrison Hybrids

    • B.Y. Morrison developed more than 450 Glenn Dale hybrids at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Introduction Station in Glenn Dale, Maryland. The Glenn Dale hybrids are cold-hardy to minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit with a wide variety of plant forms and flower colors. B.Y. Morrison continued hybridizing azaleas on his Black Acres farm after retirement to Mississippi in 1964. There are more than 50 Black Acre cultivars, varying widely in flower colors and color combinations. Marian Lee has pale, pinkish-white petals edged in carmine red. Debonair displays brilliant pink flowers with deep pink edges and pale centers.

    Harris Hybrids

    • James Harris developed the Harris hybrid group in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Some Harris hybrids, such as Pink Cascade, have a cascading habit for use in hanging baskets. Fascination is a beautiful example of a Harris hybrid. Large, single white flowers edged in deep red are more than 4 inches across. The plant is cold-hardy to minus 5 degrees Fahrenheit and grows slowly to 4 feet high. Fascination is a recipient of the American Rhododendron Society's 2004 Rhododendron of the Year Award.
