How to Grow Alternanthera Ficoidea

Alternanthera ficoidea "Red Thread"--commonly known as Joseph's coat and Parrot Leaf--grows in mild 60 to 65 degree Fahrenheit weather. A perennial shrub, this plant grows four to 12 inches tall and 14 inches wide; it blooms with small purple flowers all year long, on and off. These shrubs can add a colorful touch to your landscape and are easily maintained.

Instructions

    • 1

Sow the seeds in well-drained soil a week after the last frost or when temperatures reach 55 to 64 degrees.

    • 2

Trim surrounding shrubs and trees that block the plant from getting sun. Keep the plants in full sun or partial shade for the best growth. Full sun offers the plant the best leaf color.

    • 3

Water the plant when the soil dries until it becomes completely moist.

    • 4

Mist the plants using tepid water every morning to keep the leaves moist and to prevent the tree from drooping.

    • 5

Replant new seeds each year. These plants do not tolerate overwintering well, so planting new seeds each year will ensure that the plants look healthy and provide the most colorful leaves.
