How to Insert Calla Lilies Into Floral Foam

Floral foam is used to hold flowers upright in arrangements. The foam is ideal for flowers that have short stalks or do not feature a rigid stem. This includes calla lilies, which are used to create arrangements for wedding and funerals. Before you arrange calla lilies into floral foam, both the foam and flower must be properly prepared to ensure the floral foam stays hydrated and the lilies remain in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 1/4-inch slits into the surface of the floral foam with a sharp knife. This will ensure that water is absorbed throughout the foam.

    • 2

Soak the foam in cool water for one minute. The foam will absorb and hold the water, redistributing it to the flowers. Do not push the floral foam into the water; allow it to sink naturally.

    • 3

Remove the floral foam from the water and place it into a plastic or glass container.

    • 4

Hold the stem of the calla lily under running water, and trim it at an angle with a sharp knife. Trim the stem short enough to fit the container or vase.

    • 5

Insert a toothpick into the bottom of the calla lily. This will provide the lily support inside the floral foam.

    • 6

Insert the calla lily 2 to 3 inches into the floral foam.
