How to Keep Hydrangeas Alive in a Vase

Hydrangea bushes produce orb-shaped clusters of dainty flowers in shades of white, pink and blue. The cut flowers survive in a vase for several weeks, making them a long-lasting choice for a cut flower arrangement. The blossoms don't lose their beauty even as they begin to decline, which prolongs their usefulness as a cut flower. Properly prepare hydrangeas before displaying them in your home, and provide the correct ongoing care for your arrangement to ensure a beautiful display.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the display vase with 110 degree Fahrenheit water. Mix a flower preservative powder, available from florists, into the water.

    • 2

Strip the leaves off the hydrangea stem. Hold the bottom of the stem under water and cut off the bottom inch at 45-degree angle.

    • 3

Place the hydrangea stem in the prepared vase. Add water until the entire stem is submerged and only the flowers sit above the water.

    • 4

Mist the hydrangea flower with warm water from a spray bottle. The added moisture prevents the flower from drying out before it begins absorbing water from the vase.

    • 5

Display the hydrangeas in a cool room where they receive bright but indirect sunlight. Replace the water when it discolors or every one to two days.
