Yellow Fuji Spider Mums

Yellow spider mums belong to the genus Chrysanthemum, and mums classified as spider chrysanthemums are also known as "Fuji" chrysanthemums. Spider chrysanthemums are perennial specimens that bloom in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, but they are classified by the shape of their petals, which are generally long, tubular and hooked at the ends. Some varieties of yellow spider, or "Fuji," mums include sun spider, Anastasia spider mum and golden star spider mum.
  1. Spider Classification

    • Chrysanthemum flowers are classified by the National Chrysanthemum Society in 13 distinct groups based on the shape and arrangement of a particular specie's petals. Spider chrysanthemums, sometimes called "Fuji mums," feature long, narrow, tubular petals that often have curled, coiled, barbed or hooked ends. Disk florets are completely concealed by these sprawling ray florets that hang loosely like the long legs of a spider.

    Yellow Spider Mums

    • "Fuji" chrysanthemums bloom in a wide variety of bright colors, including several shades of yellow and gold. Different species of yellow spider chrysanthemums feature florets of varying sizes, densities and textures that protrude outward from a flat center and droop down at their ends. Yellow spider mums typically grow to reach anywhere between 18 and 36 inches in height, and their blooms appear late summer through fall.

    Chrysanthemum Care

    • Spider chrysanthemums should be planted 12 to 18 inches apart in areas that receive full sun to partial shade, but not areas that receive artificial light at night, after danger of frost has passed. "Fuji mum" seeds should be sown during fall, covered shallowly in soil. Slightly acidic, well-draining soils are best for spider chrysanthemums, and they do well as perennials in USDA zones 5 through 9. The Iowa State University Extension notes that pinching off the uppermost growth on the stems, known as the terminal shoot, and the tips of any lateral branches of yellow spider chrysanthemums when they are about 6 inches long will encourage the production of more flowers. Spider mums benefit greatly all year long from mulch, and plants can be divided during early spring to promote the growth of new blossoms.

    Mum Symbolism

    • Chrysanthemum flowers have a long, rich history that is filled with symbolism in many cultures across the globe. Throughout much of Asia, chrysanthemums are symbolic of the sun, happiness and perfection, with yellow and gold specimens representing these traits more than other mums. Spider "Fuji" chrysanthemums convey the idea of liveliness in the United States, particularly in weddings. In some cultures, yellow mums, including those of the spider variety, are associated with funerals and death.
