How to Germinate Early Ostrich Plume Aster

Ostrich plume aster is a flowering annual plant that comes in a variety of colors. It is one of the earliest blooming asters, and you can get a head start on the season even earlier by germinating the seeds indoors. A propagator, which is a heated seed starting tray with a plastic cover, will allow you to germinate the seeds in your windowsill. They are available at gardening centers. Germinate early ostrich plume asters as early as March.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the plastic lid of the propagator. Fill the cells with fine compost.

    • 2

Insert one seed into each cell at a depth of 1/2 inch. Set the propagator's heat element to 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 3

Set the propagator in a bright window out of direct sunlight or in a greenhouse. Water frequently enough to keep the soil moist but not soaked. The seeds will germinate in seven to 21 days, at which point you can transplant them into regular seed trays.
