How to Care for a Hawaiian Lei Flower

Caring for an Hawaiian flower lei ensures that it lasts long enough to wear to a special event or to simply enjoy the fragrance and colors for several days. Leis are long necklaces made from tropical flowers, such as tuberose, hibiscus, orchids and other tropical-looking plants. Whether you brought one back from a trip to Hawaii, ordered one online or received the lei as a gift, it adds an attractive, exotic and fragrant accessory to your outfit.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the instructions that come with your Hawaiian lei for the best results. Many flowers or leaves require misting once the lei arrives. Others do not last as long under damp conditions.

    • 2

Fill the spray bottle with room temperature or cool water.

    • 3

Mist the lei well if it contains Dendrobium or Vanda orchids. Other flowers that require misting are maile, red ginger and song of India.

    • 4

Remove the lei from the shipping container to allow air to circulate around the fresh flowers.

    • 5

Place a layer of newspaper in the bottom of your refrigerator. Another option is the vegetable crisper in the appliance. Leis stay looking their best in temperatures of 45 degrees Fahrenheit and above. So, if you don't have any food that may spoil at a higher temperature, adjust the temperature control dial to the warmest setting.

Spread the lei gently on top of the newspapers to store it for up to seven days.
