How to Grow Dragon Lilies

Dragon lily (Dracunculus vulgaris), is a plant known by many unusual names, including stink lily, black dragon, devil’s tongue, dragon flower, voodoo lily and dragon arum. Dragon lilies are native to the Eastern and Central Mediterranean regions, and they are not actually lilies but belong to the Araceae family of plants. These plants grow best in U.S. Department of Agricultural plant hardiness zones 7 to 10. The best time to plant dragon lilies is in the spring, after the soil warms.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a spot for planting dragon lilies in full sun to partial shade. Choose a planting bed away from doors, windows or other areas you frequent, because these plants emit a foul odor similar to rotten meat when blooming.

    • 2

Add 2 inches or more organic matter, such as compost, aged manure and peat moss, to enrich the soil. Mix this at least 6 inches deep into the planting bed and then rake the area.

    • 3

Dig holes to plant dragon lily transplants at the same depth as in the containers. Space the plants 12 inches apart.

    • 4

Water the dragon lilies well to settle them in place and to remove air bubbles in the soil. Continue to supply 1 inch of water weekly from spring to fall any time rainfall is less.

    • 5

Add a 2-inch layer of mulch around the dragon lilies to prevent weeds and to retain moisture. Reapply mulch yearly as needed to maintain the same depth.
