Remove the flowers after they are finished blooming, but leave the foliage alone. Let the foliage die back by itself. Once it is yellow and brittle, pull off the leaves.
Set the pot in a cool place to dry out, such as the garage or shed. Leave the pot there until planting time in the spring or fall, depending on your variety.
Prepare the garden planting site in the spring after the last frost, or the fall before the first frost. Remove the weeds and turn the soil at a depth of 12 inches with a shovel. The site should get full sun.
Remove the bulbs from their container. Discard any soft bulbs. Plant the bulbs into the prepared garden site at a depth of 6 inches. Water until the soil settles. The bulbs will flower the next season.
