How to Care for Cut Hydrangeas for Floral Arrangements if They Have Wilted

Hydrangeas are a notoriously difficult flower to care for because they quickly wilt after they are cut. This means they need a lot of care and attention when used in floral arrangements. If the flowers have wilted, use several care and re-invigoration techniques used by professional florists to bring the flowers back to life again. Doing so will allow you to enjoy your arrangements for longer.

Instructions

Remove the hydrangeas from the vase. Empty the water. Clean the vase with soap and water. Rinse out any residual soap. This removes any build-up of bacteria in the vase. Fill the vase with a mix of floral food and room temperature water two-inches below the top.

    • 2

Place the stem of the first hydrangea in a bowl of room temperature water. Cut the stem half an inch from the bottom, at an angle of 45 degrees, using the sharp knife. Place the cut hydrangea in the vase. Repeat with the other hydrangea stems.

Stand the vase in a cool place, out of direct sunlight and away from any heat sources. This will prevent the hydrangeas from becoming too hot and therefore prevent the flowers from wilting and drying too quickly. If the flowers are intended to be displayed outside, keep them in a cool place until the event starts.
