What Flower Goes Well With a Hibiscus Bush?

Visit any tropical garden and you'll find masses of flowers blooming as low-growing plants, medium-sized shrubs and tall trees. Among the warmer-climate plants are hibiscus flowers, which grow on bushes that send out dozens of flowers that unfurl into beautiful arrays. When planting your tropical garden, or if you just want to add different colors and flower shapes to pots nearby, you'll find a lot of flower choices available.
  1. Plumeria

    • Plumeria, or frangipani, plants are wonderful accompaniments to hibiscus. These can grow into taller trees or be placed in pots to limit their size. They are prominent flowers in tropical settings and in Hawaii are a mainstay for lei making. The five-petaled, delicately scented flowers commonly bloom in white, pink and red. The Plumeria rubra types are deciduous, while P. obtusa and other white-flowered Plumeria species are evergreen.

    Tuberose

    • A deliciously scented flower to go with hibiscus is the tuberose. Popular in perfume making, these plants grow to a couple of feet in height. The flower spikes reach 3 to 4 feet tall, with blooms from late summer into fall. The flowers are white and the foliage is long, slender, and grasslike. Placing it between the hibiscus bushes can add fragrance and contrast to the brightly colored hibiscus flowers.

    Pikake

    • Pikake is the Hawaiian name for Jasminum sambac, a highly fragrant flowering shrub that can grow as high as 6 feet tall. The plant doesn't grow fast, however, so it can take years to mature. The white pikake flowers come in four different types, ranging from single- to double-whorled blooms. This plant would be a good contrast for red or orange hibiscus but could also work well with white hibiscus flowers.

    Other Flowers

    • African Moon flowers are white daisies, also known as Oxeye, Rain or Cape Daisy. The bright orange and purple colors of the Bird of Paradise flowers are an exotic alternative, with their birdlike shape. Alpine asters are another tropical flower -- their blossoms come in violet, pink and white. Amazon lilies have a sweetly scented white flower similar to daffodils. Other flowers that can work with hibiscus are begonias, blanket flowers and many types of standard annuals, such as snapdragons, pansies and petunias.
