How to Care for a Downy Jasmine Plant

Downy jasmine is a spreading evergreen shrub that has a natural vining habit. The plant produces small white flowers with little fragrance, and the foliage has a slightly gray fuzz. The downy jasmine is low maintenance and will thrive in almost any soil type and pH. It is slightly drought-tolerant and can be grown as a hedge or ground cover. Caring for downy jasmine involves little effort aside from routine watering. It is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones nine through 11.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your downy jasmine plant in a spot that gets six to eight hours of full sun to partial shade. The spot should be large enough to accommodate the full sized plant's spread, which is 5 to 10 feet.

    • 2

Apply a 10-10-10 granular fertilizer to the planting site for your downy jasmine. Follow the application instructions on the package. The plant will not require extra fertilization after this initial treatment.

    • 3

Water your downy jasmine frequently enough to keep the soil moist to the touch, especially during hot summer weather. The downy jasmine is mildly drought-tolerant but will thrive better with regular watering.

    • 4

Lay down a 3-inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant. This will keep the moisture level high and keep down weeds.

    • 5

Pinch the growing tips whenever the downy jasmine begins to get too large. You can also let it vine out if you want to use it as a ground cover.
