Growing Chinese Forget-Me-Not

Chinese forget-me-nots (Cynoglossum amabile) originate in the Far East and only superficially resemble the common forget-me-nots (genus Myosotis). Chinese forget-me-nots’ care requirements are somewhat different, although they are tolerant and not difficult to grow, especially in cooler regions. In fact, the plant is so hardy that in parts of the United States it has become an invasive species. For this reason, an important part of their care involves removing spent flowers to prevent self-seeding.

Instructions

      Fill seed trays with a mixture of three parts general-purpose potting compost and one part coarse sand in the early spring. Dampen the soil.

      Sow the seeds thinly at a depth of about 1/4 inch.

      Keep the trays in a dark place, perhaps a cellar, for the first few days, then position in a warm location that receives plenty of natural light. Keep the soil moist.

      Transplant the seedling into your garden after about eight weeks. Select a sunny or partially shaded spot. Plant the seedlings approximately eight to 10 inches apart.

      Water the seedlings thoroughly after transplanting, and two or three times during the first week. Thereafter, water during exceptionally dry spells. Chinese forget-me-nots are reasonably drought resistant.

      Pull up weed seedlings from around the plants as they spring up.

      Cut away flowers as soon as they begin to wilt, to prevent seeds developing. It is safe to compost the flowers, but if they have begun to form seed heads, it is best to burn them. If seeds develop, the species could take over your garden or invade local ecosystems.

      Pull up the plants at the end of the growing season and compost them. They might survive for another year, but it is usually simpler to start a new batch of seedlings in the spring.
