How to Make Flower Arrangements Using Calla Lilies

Calla lilies are graceful and elegant flowers commonly used at weddings and formal receptions. Standing high atop tall, thick green stems, very few flowers can compete with the grandeur of these exotic blooms. Calla lilies, or callas, are available year-round in colors that include orange, yellow, peach, pink and white, giving you a wide variety during selection. Create eye-catching arrangements using calla lilies in isolation, or mix them with other types of flowers and foliage.

Things You'll Need

  • Glass vase, 6 to 7 inches tall
  • 4 to 6 camellia leaves
  • 8 calla lilies
  • Sharp knife or scissors
  • Baby’s breath

Instructions

    • 1

Set a 6- or 7-inch clean glass vase on a table. If required, scrub the inner and outer walls of the square or round glass vase and let it dry. Pour water into the container until two-thirds full.

    • 2

Insert four to six stems of camellia leaves inside the vase, with their tips protruding from the opening by several inches, for added color.

    • 3

Cut one calla lily down to 8 inches, one to 9 inches and one to 10 inches. Cut two 11-inch stems, two 12-inch stems and one 13-inch stem.

    • 4

Insert the 9-inch calla lily in the back of the vase, positioned near the center. Insert the 10-inch and two 11-inch stems in the back of the vase, with the flower heads at different levels and equal spacing in between.

    • 5

Insert the 13-inch lily in the center back of the vase, and the two 12-inch lilies on either side of it. Position the 8-inch lily along the center front of the vase. Step back and review the positions of the lilies to ensure they are spaced evenly and readjust if required.

    • 6

Fill large spaces in the arrangement with sprigs of delicate greenery such as baby’s breath. Insert each stem carefully so you do not shift the positions of the flowers or greenery already inserted there.

    • 7

Wrap wide ribbon in your desired shade around the center of the glass vase. Knot the ends of the ribbon in a decorative bow. Snip off excess ribbon with scissors.
