Buddleia Davidii Varieties

The butterfly bush species, scientifically known as Buddleia davidii, is native to Tibet and central China above 7,800 feet. Often considered an invasive weed, Buddleia davidii has naturalized throughout much of the continental United States as well as England, but many areas monitor its wild populations carefully. The University of Connecticut Plant Database notes that more varieties and cultivars of Buddleia davidii, also known as "summer lilac," are released every year, giving gardeners an almost endless selection of these summer flowers.
  1. White and Yellow

    • White Ball, White Bouquet, White Cloud, White Profusion and White Harlequin are Buddleia davidii varieties that bloom in nearly foot-long panicles of pure white blossoms. The Silver Frost cultivar produces a narrower panicle of compact, stark white flowers and long, silvery-gray leaves that appear frosted year-round. The Honeycomb, Moonlight and Golden Glow varieties produce flowers in varying shades and brightnesses of yellow.

    Pink and Red

    • Flowers of rich magenta-red shades are produced by Royal Red, Harlequin and Burgundy Buddleia davidii varieties. The Fascination, Pink Delight, Summer Beauty, Summer Rose and Charming varieties of butterfly bush produce blossoms in varying shades of pink.

    Blue and Purple

    • Blue flowers of various shades are produced by Empire Blue and Ellen's Blue varieties of Buddleia davidii. Purple flowers, from shades of light lilac to dark plum, are produced by Potter's Purple, Dartmoor, Black Knight and Bonnie varieties.

    Dwarf Varieties

    • Smaller butterfly bush plants stand about 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide, and they come in a wide range of colors, just like their larger counterparts. Ohio State University Horticulture & Crop Science notes that the Buddleia davidii Petite and Nanho varieties are more compact specimens. Members of the Nanho variety include Nanho Blue, Nanho Purple and Nanho Alba.
