How to Grow Paper Whites

Paperwhites are a flower in the Narcissus family. As their name indicates, they are known for their thin, white-colored flowers and a pleasant fragrance. Papewhites do not require much maintenance, making them a common choice for indoor growing. Their small size also makes them a practical choice for apartments and other locations with limited space. Growing paperwhites just requires some basic materials and a little diligence.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a waterproof container 75 percent with soil or gravel. A clear container is useful for monitoring watering.

    • 2

Push three to five paperwhite bulbs into the container so they are about three to five inches deep. The root part of the bulb should be facing down and the top inch or two of the bulb sticks out from the top.

    • 3

Pour enough water into the container to touch the root section of the bulb.

    • 4

Check the water level regularly and add a little more anytime you believe the water level is lower than the root section.

    • 5

Store the container in a cool, dark room for the first two weeks. Once a plant starts to grow out of the bulb, move the plant into a room with plenty of sunlight. The flowers themselves will likely sprout in about four more weeks.
