How to Make an Amaryillis Bloom Last

An amaryllis is a family of tropical plants. The South African Amaryllis is recognized by its full colorful blooms, while the Dutch Amaryllis is popular for its ability to bloom indoors during the winter months. Extending the blooming period of your amaryllis requires proper care. While you can’t make the blooming period last year-round, you can certainly keep it in bloom for several months with the right nutrition and an optimal environment.

Instructions

  1. Before Blooming Period

    • 1

Select a soil that will nurture your amaryllis. Look for a soil type that drains well, yet retains nutrients. An equal mixture of perlite potting soil and peat is efficient.

    • 2

Place your amaryllis in a bright, indoor area. Store it in a location where it receives direct sunlight daily.

    • 3

Fertilize the plant at least once every two weeks. Use a mild fertilizer as harsh soil conditions can damage your amaryllis.

    • 4

Manage the temperature of the environment carefully. The amaryllis is a tropical plant that can thrive in extreme conditions given that it is watered daily. However, an optimal temperature range to help extend the blooming period is 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

    During Blooming Period

    • 5

Move your amaryllis to a cooler area without direct sunlight. A cooler climate helps extend the blooming period. An optimal temperature range is 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 6

Fertilize the plant once every three weeks. In its blooming period, the amaryllis requires less fertilizer to grow. Over-fertilizing the soil can cause the blossoms to wither.

    • 7

Water the soil, as necessary. The soil should always be slightly moist. Select a pot with drainage holes at the bottom to help keep your soil well-drained.
