How to Maintain Forced Narcissus

“Forcing” is the process of encouraging a narcissus bloom to open according to your schedule rather than Mother Nature’s. The bulbs are planted in the correct medium and exposed to colder temperatures for at least 13 weeks and then placed in a warmer climate to encourage the blooms to open. After the narcissus blooms open prematurely they must be cared for correctly to ensure the flowers survive longer and the stems are not damaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Replant the forced narcissus in a large pot filled with well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter.

    • 2

Apply a water-soluble fertilizer to the bloom according to the label’s directions. According to the University of Rhode Island Landscape Horticulture Program, forcing is a traumatic experience for the bulb, requiring the need for adequate fertilization.

    • 3

Display the narcissus blooms in a cool area that is away from direct sunlight. The cooler temperature keeps the flower alive longer.

    • 4

Create a mixture of one part 50-proof liquor, such as bourbon or vodka, and four parts water. Provide the narcissus plant with approximately 1 inch of this mixture weekly to keep it from growing too large and breaking under its own weight.

    • 5

Cover the potted soil with a 1-inch layer of mulch. The mulch locks in the moisture and fertilizer, keeping your narcissus alive longer.
