When Do You Plant Garlic in Northern Michigan?

Garlic is part of the allium family, which also includes leeks, shallots, onions and chives. Alliums are generally found in the northern hemisphere of the world in temperate locations such as Northern Michigan. With some basic knowledge, it's easy to grow garlic.
  1. Time of Year

    • Garlic cloves can be planted in both the early spring and the late fall. In northern areas of the U.S., such as Northern Michigan, Garlic Central recommends planting garlic during the fall; in the southern parts of the US, it is best to plant in early spring.

    Fall Planting

    • The exact date for fall planting depends on personal preference. European traditions would call for planting during the shortest day of the year, though Garlic Central states it is also ideal to plant garlic following the first frost.

    How to Plant Garlic

    • For spacing, plant each clove of garlic upright approximately 1 inch deep, with 4 inches between each clove. Gardeners planting multiple rows should keep the rows at least 18 inches apart.
