Can I Dig Up Daffodil Bulbs in August?

Daffodil bulbs can be dug up in late August or early September. Let the flowers and leaves die back naturally. This allows the daffodil bulbs to gather nutrients for next year. This process increases the life span of the flower bulbs.
  1. Warning

    • Each year daffodil bulbs produce offsets or small bulblets, which create more daffodil flowers. Unfortunately, this also leads to overcrowding of bulbs and poor bloom performance.

    Benefits

    • It is best to allow the daffodil bulbs to stay in the ground for three to five years without disturbing them. The bulbs will grow larger and the flower blossoms will be bigger each year.

    Significance

    • Only dig up your daffodil bulbs when the flower bed is overcrowded. Start on the edge of the daffodil bed and dig down with a hand trowel to discover how deep the bulbs are. Then take a shovel and dig under the bulbs. Separate the clumps of bulbs into individual bulbs and replant them right away so the bulbs are settled by the time winter arrives.
