How to Grow Bulbs With No Dirt

Hyacinths, crocus, daffodils and tulips can be grown indoors in gravel or decorative stone and water with no dirt. This clean and attractive method of growing, known as bulb forcing, will deliver homegrown fresh flowers during the coldest winter. The colorful blooms from these bulbs will add a touch of spring to the kitchen counter or fireplace mantel. Forcing a group of these bulbs before an upcoming party could result in some fresh table centerpieces.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the bulbs in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator for three weeks.

    • 2

Fill the glass bowl 3/4 full with gravel or stone.

    • 3

Press the bases of the bulbs in the stone gently, until the bulbs stand on their own. The tops of the bulbs will point upward.

    • 4

Fill the bowl with water up to the base of the bulbs, but not touching the bulbs.

    • 5

Place the bowl of bulbs in a dark spot, like a closet or cupboard, for eight weeks.

    • 6

Place the bowl of bulbs in a sunny indoor location when shoots appear, continuing to maintain the water level at the base of the bulbs. Turn the bulbs every day to maintain straight stems.
